COSMETIC DENTISTRY

Cosmetic dentistry is a dental discipline involving alteration of the teeth appearance thus improving a person’s overall appearance and self-confidence. Anyone who is unhappy with his or her smile, tooth color, or shape is a likely candidate for cosmetic dentistry. The upper teeth show, usually, only when smiling, while the lower teeth remain hidden. This is reversed when talking; with the upper teeth remaining hidden while the lower teeth show. The color, alignment, spacing, as well as regularity, are characteristics that contribute to the overall appearance.

Hampton Dentistry offer a wide variety of cosmetic dentistry options, and with advances in technology, can completely make over your smile. If you’d like to discuss your options, please call our office and schedule a private consultation with Dr. Danielle M. Baker.

WHITENING – Including Zoom!®

Whitening of the teeth is performed for patients who desire a brighter smile. Tooth whitening can be performed to reduce discoloration and staining, or simply to provide the patient with whiter, brighter teeth. Teeth whitening is not a permanent procedure. Results can last for one to three or more years, depending upon your personal habits. In most cases, the whitening procedure is very effective and the patient is pleased with the results.

People typically have their teeth whitened to improve their appearance. Whiter teeth are associated with beauty and a healthier lifestyle. When people have a brighter smile, they tend to smile more often and are less self-conscious. In addition, a whiter smile tends to minimize the appearance of facial wrinkles, giving way to a more youthful and energetic appearance.

During your first consultation for tooth whitening, we will go over what you personally can expect for your specific smile. How white teeth will become from a given procedure will vary from person to person. The structure of your teeth and the type of procedure implemented will affect the outcome. Our office uses several methods: Zoom!®, passive tray whitening, and professional-strength whitening strips.

Zoom!® is a revolutionary tooth whitening chairside procedure. It’s safe, effective, and fast…very fast. In just over an hour, your teeth will be dramatically whiter. The convenience of Zoom!® in comparison to days of using strips or wearing trays, makes it the perfect choice for the busy individual. The Zoom!® whitening procedure is simple. It begins with a short preparation to isolate your lips and gums. The clinician then applies the proprietary Zoom!® whitening gel that is activated by a specially designed light. Teeth typically become six to ten shades whiter, sometimes more. A fluoride treatment completes the procedure. You’ll be amazed with the results. In most cases, teeth get even whiter the first few days after the procedure. Trays with gel are recommended afterward for maximum whitening and maintenance.

The tray method involves having impressions taken from which laboratory fabricated custom vinyl trays are made. The custom tray is a critical component of the treatment. It ensures that the correct amount of whitening solution is used and that the patient’s teeth are properly exposed to the whitening solution. The custom made mouth tray provides for a better fit than a one-size-fits-all mouth tray to help increase the margin of patient safety.

The steps in the home teeth-whitening regimen are fairly straightforward. A carbamide peroxide gel is placed in these trays, and the trays with gel are worn for about 3 hours or overnight. The entire process takes 3-4 weeks of daily use. Three different strengths of gel may be used; however, the higher the strength, the greater the likelihood of reactions or tooth sensitivity. The tray method is recommended for badly stained teeth, such as tetracycline staining, and it may take several months of use to see significant color improvement. For maintenance of whitened teeth the trays should be used every several months.

The end results whether using trays at home or doing Zoom!® is the same. The cost of the tray method is about half compared to Zoom!®, and there is usually less post-treatment sensitivity.

INVISALIGN®

Invisalign® straightens your teeth with a series of clear, virtually invisible custom-molded aligner trays. By using a series of clear, removable aligners, Invisalign® straightens your teeth with results you’ll notice sooner than you think. The doctor will take x-rays and impressions of your teeth, which Invisalign® will use to create the aligner trays. The course of treatment involves changing aligners approximately every two weeks, moving your teeth into straighter position step-by-step, until you have a more beautiful smile. Simply wear them throughout the day and night, and remove them when you eat or brush and floss your teeth.

While every case is unique to each patient, treatment typically takes approximately a year for adults. For teens, the length of treatment is comparable to that of braces. For additional information, visit www.invisalign.com.

Dental Veneers (sometimes called porcelain veneers or dental porcelain laminates) are wafer-thin, custom-made shells of tooth-colored materials designed to cover the front surface of teeth to create a cosmetic improvement. These shells are bonded to the front side of the teeth changing their color, shape, size, or length. Dental veneers are usually only done to the part of the teeth that are visible when talking or smiling. The procedure can be direct or indirect.

The direct technique usually involves placing composite resin on the outside of the tooth using bonding. This method is usually referred to as bonding.

The indirect technique involves two appointments because the veneers will be fabricated at a dental laboratory. At the first appointment the teeth are prepared, impressions taken, and the teeth are given a temporary covering. In two to three weeks the veneers are back from the laboratory, the temporaries are removed and the veneers are bonded to the teeth. The laboratory-fabricated veneers are usually made using porcelain or pressed ceramic, and are very esthetic.

Typically costing less than crowns, veneers won’t stain, making veneers a very popular solution for many people seeking that perfect smile. Strong and very durable, veneers last from ten to fifteen years.
